Dongdamen Night Market opens around five or six, has its fullest lineup before nine, runs to about eleven on weekdays and pushes toward midnight on some weekend stalls.

Fed by eight or nine, walk toward Zhongshan, Guangfu and Xingang Street. That stretch is part of the Old Railway pedestrian district, and ten minutes of it settles dinner.

Renaissance Music Bar at No. 4-1 Fuxing Street has more reviews than anywhere else in the city — 4.9, over three thousand — and a strong musical character, which means a counter seat requires no conversation. For something quieter, Triangle bar at No. 52 Guangfu Street and Yukkuri at No. 4, Lane 11, Xingang Street are quiet-bar territory.

Cocktails run NT$250-400. The city’s bars cluster along these few streets, and three stops in a ten-minute walk is not an exaggeration.

One rule for drinking alone: decide how many you are having before you walk in. Nobody else is going to hit the brakes for you. Afterwards, take a taxi or a designated driver — never ride home.
